The Maine Islander

The Angelique

The Ketch "Angelique" -- The first two sets of sails we made for this 95' OD steel ketch were out of specially dyed and treated #4 Cotton Canvas.  The current set is 16 oz. "Clipper" cloth, a polyester fabric designed to have a canvas look and feel.  It's available in a "tanbark" color.

The traditional color was the result of fisherman, particularly in Europe, treating their sails with the same solutions of preservative as used on their nets.  Among a wide variety of ingredients, oak bark rich in tannic acid was early on part of the mix.  Thus the term "Tanbark."  Today, conventional style polyester sailcloth is finished in a tanbark color, and also in shades of cream to represent the look of cotton sailcloth.

Skate Sailing

Skate sailing has a growing number of followers in our area.  Depending on the season, there are usually several windows of opportunity to take advantage of smooth ice.

Richard Stetson is shown with his Hopatcong style rig, originally developed during the turn of the last century in New Jersey.  We've experimented with a variety of shapes and sizes, including some for kids.  We now stock a 53 square foot sail.
